Leaving does not always begin with a plane ticket. Sometimes it begins with a question: what would my life look like somewhere else? Another street, another language, another way of feeling at home.

Diário BFY makes room for that question. A journal about Brazil beyond the holiday photographs, and about moving beyond the paperwork. We will explore cities, culture, people and the details that make up an ordinary day.

Finding your place

The question of belonging crosses borders. For many people from African diasporas, it is connected to being seen, recognised and welcomed. Moving to a different country can change that question. It does not automatically answer it.

We want to give it space in this journal, without telling you how you should feel. A country cannot be reduced to its difficulties or its promises. One person's experience does not stand for everyone else's.

Looking closely

A beautiful photograph can make you want to arrive. It cannot tell you about the morning commute, looking for a home or the first words you exchange with a neighbour. Those are stories we want to explore too.

We want to build a publication that is useful before you leave and enjoyable after you arrive. Practical questions, different perspectives and encounters. No catalogue of perfect lives.
