You can fall in love with a city through a photograph. To live there, you also need to imagine the days that will not be a holiday. Where will you shop? How much time will you spend travelling? What would you like your evenings to feel like?

Start with a day

Before making a list of neighbourhoods, write down an ordinary day. Your place of work or study, your journeys, your family's needs and the habits that matter to you. That small list often describes your search better than a property listing.

Then consider how a home fits into that day. Its location matters as much as its photographs. A neighbourhood you enjoy visiting is not necessarily the one that will suit your everyday life.

Take time to look

If you can visit, return at different times. Listen, walk, notice the shops and transport. Ask more than one person. Their answers may differ, and those differences are part of what you need to understand.

A visit is still only a glimpse. It helps you sharpen your questions, not answer everything. Leaving room for uncertainty helps you plan more realistically.
